Spare Parts Management for Industrial Plants

Industrial machine component

A small missing part can stop a whole production line. Yet holding too much stock ties up cash and storage space. Good spare parts management finds a sensible balance between the two.

Identify critical spares

List your equipment, then ask two questions about each part: what happens if it fails, and how long would a replacement take to arrive? Parts that would stop production and have long lead times should be the first priority.

Group your parts

  • Critical spares: failure stops production or creates a safety risk.
  • Wear parts: belts, seals, filters and bearings that are replaced regularly.
  • Consumables: lubricants and routine maintenance items.

Record the right details

Keep the equipment make and model, part number, nameplate photo, supplier, last price and lead time. Correct details prevent wrong orders and speed up sourcing, especially for imported parts.

Set sensible stock levels

Use actual consumption and lead times where you have them. Review them regularly, because import delays and exchange rates can change quickly in Nigeria.

Store parts properly

Keep parts clean, labelled and protected from moisture and heat. Rotate stock with a limited shelf life, such as seals and some lubricants, and record every issue from the store.

Check quality

Counterfeit and poorly matched parts can cause further damage. Buy from suppliers who can confirm the specification and origin, and inspect parts on arrival.
