How to Choose a Steel Fabrication Company in Nigeria

Welder carrying out steel fabrication in a workshop

Choosing a steel fabrication company is one of the most important decisions on any industrial or commercial project. The fabricator’s work determines how well a structure fits on site, how long it lasts and how safe it is to use. A low quote can become expensive if parts arrive late, do not align or need rework.

This guide sets out what to check before you hire a steel fabricator in Lagos or anywhere else in Nigeria.

What steel fabrication covers

Steel fabrication is the process of turning raw steel sections and plates into finished components by cutting, drilling, bending, welding and coating them. Typical outputs include portal frames, columns and beams, mezzanine floors, platforms, handrails, stairs, tanks, silos, pipe supports and conveyor structures.

Good fabrication is not only about welding. It starts with engineering drawings and ends only when the finished parts have been checked, protected, delivered and installed.

Seven things to check before you hire

1. Can they work from proper drawings?

Ask whether the company produces or works from general arrangement and shop drawings. Shop drawings show every member, hole, weld and dimension. Without them, errors are usually discovered on site, when they cost the most to correct.

2. Who is responsible for the design?

Structural steel should be designed by a qualified engineer. In Nigeria, engineering practice is regulated by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). Confirm who is signing off the design and which code it follows, such as Eurocode 3 or BS 5950.

3. How is material sourced and verified?

Steel grade affects strength and weldability. Ask for mill test certificates where the project requires them, and confirm that section sizes and plate thicknesses match the drawings. Undersized material is a common way to reduce a quote, so compare specifications and not only prices.

4. Are welders and procedures qualified?

Ask how welders are qualified and how welding procedures are controlled. AWS D1.1 is a widely used structural welding code. Pressure work and process piping have stricter requirements and need their own qualifications.

5. What inspection is included?

Agree the inspection plan before work starts. It may include dimensional checks, visual weld inspection and, on critical joints, non-destructive testing such as ultrasonic or magnetic particle testing. Ask for inspection records at handover.

6. How will the steel be protected?

Nigeria’s humidity, and salt air in coastal areas such as Lagos, can shorten the life of poorly protected steel. Surface preparation matters as much as the paint. Ask about blast cleaning, the coating system, dry film thickness and whether galvanizing suits your environment.

7. Can they deliver and install safely?

Large components must fit local transport and site access limits. Check who handles lifting plans, cranes, erection sequence and site safety. A single team that is accountable from workshop to site reduces gaps between fabrication and installation.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing quotes that are based on different steel weights or specifications.
  • Starting fabrication before the foundations and anchor bolts are confirmed.
  • Leaving coating, transport or erection out of the scope, then paying extra later.
  • Accepting verbal changes without updating the drawings.

Questions to ask on your first call

  • Can you show similar work and let me speak to the client?
  • What will you need from me to give an accurate quotation?
  • Which codes will you work to, and what records will I receive?
  • Who will manage the project day to day?
  • What is included in the price, and what is excluded?

In summary

The best fabrication partner is the one that controls the whole process, from drawings and material checks to inspection and installation. Spend time on the scope early, and compare proposals like for like. For related planning advice, read our guide to steel warehouse construction in Nigeria.
